The Tiny Code Behind Crypto Card Rewards

There’s a surprisingly important detail behind the latest meme coin and credit card rewards story:

The merchant category code.

Every card transaction gets a category that helps the payment network and card issuer understand what was purchased.

For cryptocurrency, Visa’s rules use crypto-related categories such as MCC 6051, with additional indicators identifying the transaction as crypto.

But recent testing found some meme coin purchases being processed under MCC 5815, a category normally associated with digital goods and media.

That matters because the transaction can then look like a regular digital purchase rather than a crypto purchase.

Some users consequently received normal card rewards such as points or cash back.

Now Visa is moving to stop payment processors from using the digital-media category for meme coin purchases, with a reported grace period for the change.

The interesting lesson isn’t really about rewards.

It’s about how much information is contained inside a four-digit code.

Same card.
Same money.
Different classification.
Different treatment.

That’s how the payment infrastructure behind crypto can matter just as much as the asset itself.
