🐋 WALRUS ($WAL): Beyond the Token

Walrus started as a developer preview in June 2024 and reached Mainnet on March 26, 2025, developed by Mysten Labs, the team behind Sui.

But what makes Walrus different?

It is built as decentralized data infrastructure. Large data blobs are encoded, split and distributed across storage nodes, allowing data to remain recoverable even when some nodes are unavailable.

Its focus goes beyond basic storage. Developers can build applications around programmable data, opening potential use cases across Web3, gaming, media, AI and decentralized websites.

WAL is used within the network for staking, storage economics and governance. The reported maximum supply is 5 billion WAL, making future supply releases and token distribution important factors to monitor.

The technology is promising, but technology alone is not enough.

Walrus still faces competition from established decentralized-storage networks such as Filecoin and Arweave. Real developer adoption, stored data and sustainable network demand will matter more than campaign hype.

The biggest question:

Can Walrus become truly decentralized while reducing dependence on its original ecosystem?
