BTC climbed nearly 2% today while the Nasdaq fell 1.65% and South Korea's Kospi dropped 3% -- a real divergence, not a rounding error.

The news: AI stocks sold off hard after Anthropic's CEO publicly called for slowing the pace of frontier AI development over safety concerns, quickly echoed by OpenAI's and xAI's leadership. Nasdaq 100 futures fell ~1.65%, South Korea's Kospi dropped 3% (SK Hynix -6%), and chipmakers/neocloud providers fell 5-6% across the board. At the same time, oil spiked nearly 4% on a Saudi pipeline closure, and Fed rate-hike odds for this week's meeting climbed further. Despite all three pressures landing the same day, BTC rose about 1-2% to ~$77,800-78,000 and ETH added roughly 1% to $2,500.

The catch: one day of decoupling doesn't make crypto immune to risk-off sentiment -- BTC has traded in lockstep with tech stocks plenty of times this year, and a rate-sensitive asset shrugging off an equity selloff for a day is a data point, not a new regime. Part of what's supporting crypto here specifically is optimism around pending market-structure legislation, which is its own separate catalyst layered on top of the AI-stock story, not proof that crypto has structurally detached from equities.

Our read: today's divergence is genuine and worth noting, but the real test is whether BTC keeps holding up if the AI-stock selloff extends into the week, especially heading into Friday's Fed decision.

Did today change your view on whether BTC is decoupling from tech stocks, or is one day too early to tell?
