🇷🇺 Sberbank Is Preparing to Let Borrowers Use Bitcoin as Collateral

Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, is preparing to expand lending backed by cryptocurrency.

The bank plans to accept Bitcoin as collateral, with Ethereum and Tether's USDT potentially joining later, subject to approval from Russia's central bank.

This is a major shift in how traditional banking treats digital assets.

Instead of selling crypto to access liquidity, eligible borrowers could potentially use their holdings as collateral for a loan.

And Sberbank isn't starting from zero.

The bank already piloted a Bitcoin-backed corporate loan earlier this year, showing that crypto-collateralized lending is moving beyond the experimental stage in Russia.

The timing is especially significant.

Russia's new crypto framework is set to take effect on September 1, 2026, creating a more formal regulatory environment for digital assets.

If Sberbank eventually accepts BTC, ETH and USDT at scale, it could create a new bridge between crypto wealth and traditional banking liquidity.

But there's another side to the story.

Crypto-backed loans carry serious risks. If the value of collateral falls sharply, borrowers could face additional collateral requirements or liquidation.

Still, the bigger picture is hard to ignore:

One of Russia's biggest banks is preparing to treat major cryptocurrencies as assets that can back traditional loans.

Crypto isn't just being traded.

It's increasingly being integrated into the financial system.
