South Korea’s financial sector is taking another step toward exploring stablecoin-based payments.
Shinhan Financial Group and Visa are working together to explore stablecoin infrastructure, AI-powered payments and new B2B and B2C payment models.
The initial focus includes testing stablecoin issuance, remittances, redemption and stablecoin-based card payment settlement.
What makes this interesting is the combination of traditional banking infrastructure with Visa’s global payment network and stablecoin technology.
If these tests prove practical, stablecoins could become more connected with existing payment and settlement systems rather than operating separately from traditional finance.
The AI component is another area worth watching. Both companies are also exploring AI-powered payment models, suggesting the partnership is looking beyond simple crypto transfers toward more programmable financial services.
However, it is important to remember that this is still at the testing and development stage. It does not mean a fully commercial stablecoin service is already live in South Korea.
For me, the bigger signal is the growing interest from established financial institutions in using stablecoins as potential payment infrastructure.
Stablecoins may not transform traditional finance overnight, but partnerships like this show how the two worlds could gradually move closer together.
