🚨 SHOCKING: US-Canada trade talks just collapsed hours before a deadline, and 50% tariffs are now live on Canadian goods.
Negotiations fell apart Friday night, minutes before a midnight deadline for the tariffs to take effect on $20 billion worth of Canadian products.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada declined to finalize a deal under terms both sides had agreed to earlier in the week. Canada tells it differently.
Carney said: "In the coming days, the government will introduce additional measures to support Canadian workers and businesses." He didn't stop there. He said talks had made progress toward "improving Canada's position as having the best deal in the world with the U.S.," but that progress "did not meet Canada's objectives," so he suspended negotiations and recalled Canada's negotiators to Ottawa.
The breakdown reportedly centered on Canada seeking concessions on existing US tariffs covering steel, aluminum, autos, and lumber, concessions Washington wasn't willing to deliver.
The tariffs now hit everyday items: wooden hockey sticks, tongue depressors, plywood, liquor, electrical equipment, roughly 5% of everything Canada ships to the US annually. Energy, potash, and critical minerals were specifically carved out.
Carney's response was immediate: "Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses."
Canada also announced plans for nearly $500 billion in infrastructure investment and efforts to double its preferential market access from 1.5 billion to roughly 3 billion consumers worldwide, a clear signal Ottawa is looking past Washington entirely.
The two countries traded $376 billion in the first half of this year alone, second only to Mexico as a US trading partner. This isn't a minor spat between allies. It's a real fracture.
