According to the BBC, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan to impose an annual tax on second homes worth more than $5 million, or condos and co-ops worth more than $1 million, has triggered criticism after the city published a list of nearly one million properties and names tied to the proposal. The administration says the information was already public and that the surcharge could raise $500 million a year for social programs and city services, while supporters argue it would help fund affordability measures.

City council members and homeowners raised concerns at a hearing this week about the rollout, with some saying the list could create security risks and unfairly target property owners. A group of homeowners has sued to block the publication of the list, and Mamdani’s administration did not attend the hearing, saying it could not testify while the matter is being litigated. The tax has also won support from Governor Kathy Hochul, though some wealthy residents say it could discourage investment in New York City.
