U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Michael Selig outlined a new regulatory roadmap at an Innovation Advisory Committee meeting, focusing on crypto assets, AI compute markets, and prediction markets. According to Foresight News, the plan sets out three main regulatory priorities.
On crypto, the CFTC will continue to push Congress to pass market structure legislation such as the CLARITY Act. If legislation remains stalled, the agency plans to use its existing authority to study a regulatory framework for crypto markets, including the possible designation of some exchanges as a special type of designated contract market. Staff have also been asked to speak with on-chain protocol developers about compliance paths.
On AI, the CFTC is focusing on compute markets and has worked with the Commerce Department to publish a request for comments. The agency is studying spot, forward, and derivatives frameworks.
On prediction markets, Selig stressed the CFTC's federal exclusive jurisdiction over lawful derivatives. The agency is also moving ahead with changes to Rule 40.11, updates to full-collateral event contract data reporting, and adjustments to core principles under Parts 38 and 40, with attention on retail protection, product governance, and market design.
