Why Dusk Built Its VM Around Zero-Knowledge Proofs
I was thinking about something this morning
If Dusk is trying to bring financial applications onchain while keeping some information private why not just build the smart-contract system first and add zero-knowledge tools later
That was my assumption
So I went back to the Dusk whitepaper and looked more closely at Rusk the VM used for smart-contract execution
That's where things got interesting
Rusk isn't just a normal execution environment with privacy added on top
The design gives contracts access to cryptographic operations directly, including hashing elliptic-curve operations signatures and zero-knowledge proof verification
At first I thought this was just a developer convenience
Then I realized why it matters
If zero-knowledge proofs are something an application may need only occasionally you can treat them like an extra tool
But if you're building financial applications where some information needs to stay confidential while the system still has to prove that the rules were followed cryptography becomes part of the actual execution
So putting those capabilities closer to the VM starts making much more sense
The more I looked at it the more I felt that Dusk wasn't simply asking
How do we add privacy to smart contracts
The deeper question seems to be
What should smart-contract execution look like if privacy and verifiable computation are part of the job from the beginning
That's a much more interesting design problem
And honestly this was one of those details I probably would've missed if I had only read the usual Dusk is a privacy blockchain description
