Coinbase’s Base is set to launch its public mainnet today, August 9, marking a major step for the Ethereum layer-2 network. The rollout follows weeks of preparation that opened the network to developers and infrastructure providers ahead of the broader release.

The launch could expand Base’s role as an Ethereum scaling and application platform, giving builders a production environment for decentralized apps, payments and tokenized assets. Base has already become one of the more closely watched layer-2 ecosystems, so the public launch puts its next phase firmly in focus.
The timing is interesting, too. Base is entering this phase while competition among Ethereum layer-2 networks remains intense, with developers and users increasingly looking at transaction costs, liquidity and application activity when choosing where to build. 👀

There’s also plenty of speculation around whether Base will eventually introduce a native token, but there’s no confirmed token launch tied to today’s mainnet opening. For now, the milestone is about the network itself going public.
