A wave of hardware leaks — along with an internal Apple memo that got out — has pushed the iPhone 18 Pro to the top of the consumer tech conversation.
The details point to a 2nm A20 Pro chip, a variable aperture camera system, and 12GB of RAM. Analysts also warn the starting price could reach $1,399 or more when the device launches this fall.

One of them is its own decision to delay the standard iPhone 18 until spring 2027 — a move that effectively leaves the iPhone 18 Pro as the only new iPhone buyers can get this autumn.
That gives the Pro lineup far more commercial weight than it usually carries. Not a marketing advantage, but a structural one.
When there is no standard model to absorb demand, every purchasing decision defaults to the Pro tier, and Apple’s revenue per unit shipped rises accordingly. The price signal is drawing particular attention from Wall Street. GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu has downgraded Apple stock to “Hold,” citing anticipated price increases of $200 to $300 on the Pro tier, a move he attributes to an ongoing memory cost crisis tied to the jump to 12GB DRAM.
That cost pressure is real and worth understanding on its own terms, DRAM at this density and speed does not get cheaper just because Apple needs it to. The memory bill is a physical constraint, not a negotiating position, and the $1,399 starting price reflects that reality more honestly than any product positioning statement Apple will issue in September.
IPhone 18 Pro’s Hardware, Three Long-Delayed Upgrades Finally Shipping
The three most-discussed specifications circulating in the leak cycle are features that industry observers have tracked as persistent, unfulfilled Apple roadmap items. A variable aperture lens, long standard on high-end Android competitors, would give iPhone photographers manual-style control over depth of field without switching lenses.
On current iPhones, aperture is fixed, the camera cannot widen or narrow the opening through which light enters. Variable aperture changes that, allowing the sensor to behave differently in bright sunlight versus low light without the computational workarounds Apple currently relies on.
The move to a 2nm A20 Pro chip, built on TSMC‘s next-generation process node, promises meaningful efficiency gains over the current 3nm A18 Pro. Shrinking transistors from 3nm to 2nm means more compute packed into the same silicon footprint, or equivalent compute at lower power draw, both of which matter for on-device AI inference, where the cost per operation is paid in milliwatts and heat.
And 12GB of unified RAM represents the largest memory configuration Apple has ever shipped in an iPhone. That figure is not a marketing headline, it is the direct output of a supply-chain bet on high-density DRAM that is already moving Foxconn’s balance sheet.
That RAM figure matters beyond raw performance. The standard iPhone 18 is expected to receive only 9GB of DRAM, which analysts say will be insufficient to run two of the most demanding Siri AI upgrades Apple is planning. The iPhone 18 Pro‘s 12GB configuration is specifically designed to handle those workloads, creating a hard hardware line between who gets full Apple Intelligence features and who does not.
Apple’s public messaging will frame this as a premium feature. The memory cost structure is why the line exists at all.
Larger batteries are also confirmed across multiple independent sources, addressing one of the most consistent complaints from iPhone 18 Pro users, a sensible move given that on-device AI inference draws more sustained power than any previous iPhone workload.
AI Capability Is Gated Behind The RAM Threshold
The hardware story and the AI story are inseparable this cycle. Apple is rolling out a more capable version of Siri built on large language model integration, including a ChatGPT partnership, alongside Visual Intelligence upgrades that can scan nutrition labels, read contacts, and identify Wallet passes automatically. Crucially, these features are gated behind hardware. This is not an arbitrary software restriction, running a large language model locally requires holding model weights in memory simultaneously with the working context of a conversation.
At 9GB, the headroom is not there. At 12GB, it is. The constraint is arithmetic, not artificial scarcity.
For buyers still holding iPhone 15 or earlier models, the AI capabilities alone create a meaningful upgrade argument, even before the camera and chip improvements enter the conversation. Foxconn, Apple’s primary manufacturing partner, has already posted record monthly profits ahead of iPhone 18 Pro mass production, signaling that the supply chain is scaling up on schedule for a September event. Foxconn’s earnings reflect AI-related infrastructure investment rather than device volume, but the timing confirms that full-scale production is imminent. September Launch Window And The Pricing Test
