I originally thought Babylon’s biggest security question was simple: how safely can BTC be staked without giving up custody?
After spending hours reading its documentation, I realized I was looking at the wrong layer.
What really caught my attention was how Babylon handles Finality Provider keys. I found that the EOTS key and Babylon Genesis key are fixed when the provider is created and cannot simply be rotated later.
At first, I saw this as a limitation. Then I understood the reasoning. Keeping the identity fixed makes the relationship between a provider, its signing authority, and delegated BTC more predictable. But it also makes operational discipline much more important.
If a key is compromised, lost, or poorly managed, the problem isn’t solved by casually replacing it. Backups, isolation, monitoring, and key security become part of the protocol’s practical security boundary.
That changed how I view Babylon: self-custody reduces custody risk, but it doesn’t eliminate operational risk.
I think that trade-off deserves more attention.

I spent hours digging through Babylon’s staking and governance design, and one decision changed how I viewed the whole system: BTC can secure Babylon without giving BTC stakers governance power.
My first assumption was simple: if my Bitcoin is providing economic security, I should also have a direct vote over the protocol. But Babylon deliberately separates those roles. BTC stakers delegate to Finality Providers and can earn BABY rewards, yet governance remains tied to BABY holders.
At first, this looked like a weakness. Then I understood the trade-off.
I think the design is trying to prevent temporary BTC capital from automatically becoming permanent political control. That makes the security layer more modular, but it also creates a real governance gap: the people providing the underlying economic security do not directly decide how the system evolves.
The more I studied it, the more I saw this as an intentional separation of responsibilities rather than an oversight.
