Bitcoin and Litecoin Holder Loses $282 Million in Sophisticated Social Engineering Attack
A crypto holder lost approximately $282 million in Bitcoin (BTC) and Litecoin (LTC) after falling victim to a sophisticated social engineering scam. On January 10, attackers impersonating Trezor support and convinced the victim to reveal a 12-word recovery seed phrase, allowing them to steal around $139 million in BTC and $153 million in LTC. According to Odaily, blockchain forensics firm ZeroShadow confirmed the incident was caused by human manipulation—not a flaw in Trezor's wallet software or private-key infrastructure. The stolen assets were rapidly funneled through THORChain, converted into Monero (XMR) via instant exchange services, making them harder to trace. Despite the quick laundering attempt, ZeroShadow managed to identify and freeze roughly $700,000 within 20 minutes. The attack serves as a critical reminder that a wallet's seed phrase is the master key to all funds. Under the BIP39 standard, a 12-word seed phrase provides about 128 bits of entropy, while a 24-word phrase offers 256 bits. Once a recovery phrase is shared, attackers gain full control of the wallet. Chainalysis estimates that nearly 23% of all mined Bitcoin is permanently inaccessible due to lost private keys, forgotten seed phrases, damaged backups, and missing inheritance plans. $BTC $LTC
