Bitcoin has risen to its highest level since U.S. President Donald Trump announced "Liberation Day" and imposed tariffs, amid a decline in the dollar due to renewed concerns about Trump's efforts to dismiss Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.
Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, recorded an increase of about 3% to surpass the $87,600 mark on Monday morning. This effectively wipes out most of the losses it incurred since Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on April 2, which caused widespread disruption in global markets.
This rebound comes as both the dollar and U.S. stock index futures fell on Monday after Trump's criticism of the Federal Reserve raised concerns about its independence. The dollar index hit its lowest level since January 2024 after Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, stated on Friday that Trump is considering the possibility of dismissing Powell.
