The edge computing narrative in traditional tech has been building for five years as content delivery networks, autonomous vehicles, industrial IoT, and low-latency applications all require computation to happen physically close to the end user rather than in a central data center thousands of miles away.
The blockchain version of edge computing solves a specific problem: decentralized applications currently route almost all their computation through centralized cloud providers (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) even when the settlement layer is decentralized. The application code runs on a centralized server, the API calls go to centralized endpoints, and only the final transaction settlement happens on-chain. This creates a fundamental centralization risk that undermines the decentralization claims of most Web3 applications.
Edge Protocol replaces the centralized cloud layer with a decentralized network of edge nodes — computing resources distributed geographically that provide the computation, storage, and bandwidth that Web3 applications need, without centralizing any of it in a single provider.
