BitGo cuts 15% staff. AI pivot starts.

BitGo just cut 15% of its workforce. CEO Mike Belshe called it a one-time action focused on trading, stablecoins and AI. The company had 603 employees as of late 2025, meaning roughly 90 people lost their jobs. BitGo is still hiring for 51 open roles, suggesting this is a targeted restructuring, not a survival move.

The timing is brutal. BitGo went public in January at $18 per share. Now it trades at $4.80, down 73%. The stock dropped another 4.67% after the layoff announcement. Meanwhile, crypto companies have shed over 5,000 jobs in 2026 alone. One firm cut 4,000 staff. Others cut hundreds each. Everyone is trimming headcount as AI reshapes the infrastructure layer.

The pattern is clear. Crypto custody is being automated. Legacy firms that don't adapt will be replaced by AI-native platforms. The question isn't whether this transformation happens. It's whether traditional custodians can survive it.
