Anthropic demands Congress act on AI model theft

Anthropic dropped a bombshell on Capitol Hill this week. The AI lab claims Alibaba-linked operators ran 25,000 fake accounts to distill Claude through 28.8 million API exchanges. That is not just API abuse — it is systematic IP theft at industrial scale.

The practice of distillation lets competitors train their own models by querying a powerful one repeatedly. Think of it like reverse-engineering a recipe by ordering the dish thousands of times. Anthropic says this undermines the entire business model of building frontier AI systems.

This matters beyond just AI labs. Blockchain projects are building the exact infrastructure needed to solve this problem. Decentralized data provenance, on-chain licensing, and tokenized intellectual property rights could make model theft traceable and enforceable. Projects working on data consent layers are positioned to benefit as AI regulation tightens globally.
