Bishop, Founder & Reformer

Born around 1080 in Xanten, Germany, to a noble family, Norbert lived a worldly life as a courtier and soldier until a near-death experience during a thunderstorm led to his conversion. Ordained a priest, he embraced radical poverty, gave away his wealth, and founded the Order of Canons Regular of Premontre (Norbertines) in 1120, dedicated to communal life, preaching, and Eucharistic devotion. As Archbishop of Magdeburg, he reformed clergy, fought simony, and promoted peace. He died on 6 June 1134. Canonized in 1582.
