WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald
$TRUMP has sparked a major diplomatic firestorm after threatening to impose a staggering 100% tariff on all Canadian imports. The warning comes amid claims that China is "completely taking over" its northern neighbor—a situation the President described as a threat to U.S. national security and the North American economic order.
Taking to social media on Saturday, the President issued a series of blunt warnings directed at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whom he repeatedly referred to as "Governor." Trump alleged that Ottawa is positioning itself to become a "drop-off port" for Chinese goods seeking to bypass U.S. trade barriers.
"Eating Canada Alive"
The President’s rhetoric reached a fever pitch as he described a bleak future for Canada under increased Chinese influence.
"China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life," Trump wrote. "If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A."
$TRUMP further lamented the state of the long-time ally, stating that China is "successfully and completely taking over the once Great Country of Canada," even adding a characteristic jab: "I only hope they leave Ice Hockey alone!"
Tensions Over Trade and Defense
The escalation follows Prime Minister Carney’s recent visit to Beijing, where a deal was struck to lower tariffs on Canadian agricultural exports, such as canola, in exchange for Canada easing its 100% surtax on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). Under the new agreement, Canada will allow a quota of 49,000 Chinese EVs at a significantly reduced tariff rate of 6.1%.
The trade dispute is compounded by friction over regional defense. Trump recently criticized Canada for opposing his "Golden Dome" missile defense system proposed for Greenland, an initiative the President claims would protect the entire continent
