The biggest illusion in onchain DeFi: just because you can see the data doesn't mean you understand the risk.
A Vault showing solid APY? Doesn't mean there's no liquidity mismatch underneath. A stablecoin with a peg mechanism? Doesn't guarantee it holds in extreme conditions.
When evaluating products, strip away the surface metrics. Ask: Who's borrowing the capital? Who controls the parameters? What happens when things break? Are there liquidity constraints on exit?
Take @protocol_fx's $fxUSD. The peg isn't just one mechanism—it's layered defense:
Layer 1: Stability Pool. $fxUSD swaps with $USDC at market price. Price drifts, the pool pulls it back.
Layer 2: Funding Rate. When the pool runs low on USDC, the protocol charges leverage positions a temporary funding fee to pull more liquidity in.
Layer 3: Redemption Floor. Anyone can redeem $fxUSD for $1 worth of wstETH or $WBTC, with a 0.5% redemption fee. Hard backstop.
If $USDC itself depegs? Protocol pauses peg maintenance and blocks USDC deposits. External risk stays external.
These boundaries are documented. Not hidden. Protection mechanisms exist to manage risk, not pretend it doesn't exist.
Before chasing APY, trace the capital flow. Before trusting a peg, understand what it depends on.
