Day 3 of My Crypto Learning: What Is a Crypto Wallet? 🔐
Biggest surprise today: a crypto wallet doesn’t actually hold your coins 👇
💡 What a wallet really does
Your coins live on the blockchain. A wallet holds the keys that prove they are yours.
🔑 Two keys to know
• Public address = like your email address or bank account number. Safe to share so people can send you crypto.
• Private key = like your password. It proves ownership and approves (“signs”) payments. Never share it.
📝 Seed phrase
Most wallets give you 12 to 24 words that can restore your wallet. Anyone who has these words can take your crypto.
🏦 Custodial vs non-custodial
• Custodial = a company holds your keys (like an exchange account). Easier, and the company can help you recover access. But you rely on them.
• Non-custodial = you hold your own keys. Full control, but if you lose your seed phrase, your coins can be lost forever.
🔥❄️ Hot vs cold
Hot wallet = connected to the internet (an app). Cold wallet = kept offline (like a hardware device).
⚠️ Safety rules I learned
• Never share your seed phrase or private key with anyone, even someone claiming to be “support”
• Write it on paper, not in a screenshot or a cloud note
• Download wallet apps only from official sources
• If it’s lost, it usually can’t be recovered
This is learning, not financial advice.
