Uniswap just handed Optimism the keys to its own chain — and $OP still couldn't hold the rally.
On October 13, OP spiked about 20% to $0.16 on the news. By October 15, it had given most of it back. Today it trades near $0.135, back below the support it just broke out above.
So was the spike fake — or is the market sleeping on the biggest shift in Optimism's story since the Superchain began?
Here's what actually happened. On October 9, Uniswap Labs announced Unichain is moving to Optimism's OP Enterprise stack. The testnet migrated on October 13. The mainnet cutover is scheduled for October 29.
Optimism takes over production operations: sequencers, RPC, monitoring, incident response. Chain IDs, contracts, balances and apps stay exactly the same — and Unichain stays a Stage 1 rollup with permissionless fault proofs.
Read that again: Uniswap, the biggest DEX in crypto, is trusting Optimism to run its chain. That's not a partnership logo. That's a client.
And it reframes what Optimism even is. Not just another L2 fighting for DeFi scraps — OP Mainnet's own TVL is only about $0.44B, and its DEX volume fell 71% week-on-week. The real business is the Superchain: 50+ OP Stack chains with over $14B in aggregate TVL.
But keep one thing straight: OP Enterprise service revenue is separate from the Superchain revenue that feeds the buyback plan. This deal doesn't directly fund buybacks.
Speaking of buybacks — the real ones are still months away. Governance approved sending 50% of Superchain revenue to OP buybacks on a one-year trial starting February 2027. An earlier program bought only about 9.4M OP in early 2026, and those tokens sit in the treasury — they weren't burned. Meanwhile roughly 343M OP is scheduled to enter circulation between May 2026 and April 2027. The buyback math only works if Superchain revenue grows a lot from here.
And there's a ghost in this story: Base. In February 2026, Coinbase's chain walked away from Superchain revenue-sharing — it had been roughly 90% of sequencer revenue — and OP fell about 25% in days.
History keeps repeating here. Ecosystem-joining headlines pop 20% and fade. Upgrades pop and fade. The October 29 cutover has to be flawless, because the market now grades Optimism as an operator, not a promise.
So watch the chart. $OP is sitting just above $0.133 support after losing $0.14. A reclaim of $0.1517, then the $0.158–$0.162 zone, reopens the rally story toward $0.17. Lose $0.133 and $0.126 is next. With nearly two-thirds of traders long, a breakdown would hurt fast.
Check $OP's chart against those levels before October 29 — that cutover, not this week's noise, is the test that decides whether the Unichain deal was the turning point or just another faded pop. And $ETH holders should care too: every OP Stack win is Ethereum scaling working as designed, with $UNI's chain as the proof.
