The headline every trader needs to see:
Coinbase — the exchange sitting on roughly 5% of the entire global Bitcoin supply — just published a technical paper urging Bitcoin developers to begin preparing for quantum threats immediately, warning that consensus changes and ecosystem migrations can take years
The scary numbers:
Around 6.9 million BTC could be exposed to a future quantum attack financefeeds
Roughly 1.7 million BTC sits in old Pay-to-Public-Key addresses with exposed keys
About 20,000 addresses each holding 50+ BTC already have exposed public keys — they're first in line
But here's the calm-down:
No quantum computer can break Bitcoin today Coinbase itself says there's no deadline and no emergency action needed from holders right now. This is a prepare-early, panic-later situation. The whole point is that upgrades take so long that starting yesterday is already late
What Coinbase is proposing:
Phased migration — funds spendable with either the old key or a new quantum-resistant key
Supports BIP-360 and P2TRv2 as flexible address formats
Researching ML-DSA, SLH-DSA, and FN-DSA signature algorithms
A separate public debate over what to do with lost or dormant coins

A split composition — on the left, a bright orange Bitcoin (₿) logo glowing over a dark network grid; on the right, a translucent blue quantum computer chip with light beams threatening the network line. Between them, a shield icon forming. Overlay text: "6.9M BTC IN THE CROSSHAIRS — COINBASE SAYS: START NOW." Cinematic, high contrast, orange-and-cyan palette, moody 8k financial-tech style.
