2026 has been a stock picker's market — and the numbers back it up.

The S&P 500 is up roughly 13.8% YTD, yet over 40% of its stocks are DOWN this year. Even 67% of active large-cap funds underperformed the index in H1 2026, per S&P Global.

The index may look strong, but underneath the surface it's a completely different story. Not every sector is participating, and even within the strongest sectors some stocks are breaking out while others are breaking down.

A few lessons worth remembering:

• Prioritize businesses with strong free cash flow, growing earnings, healthy balance sheets, and manageable debt
• Focus on stocks building constructive bases rather than chasing extended moves
• Follow relative strength and institutional accumulation — pay attention to strong-volume breakouts and low-volume pullbacks
• Respect the bigger trend. Favor stocks holding key moving averages and avoid Stage 4 downtrends. A stock being down 50% doesn't automatically make it cheap
• Manage position sizing, avoid excessive sector concentration, and don't be afraid to hold cash
• Protect your gains and respect your exit rules. Making money is one thing — keeping it is another

2026 has been a reminder that stock selection, timing, and risk management matter more than ever.
