A London judge ruled that Chinese law governs fraud victims' claims to 61,000 seized Bitcoin worth £3.8 billion, or $5 billion. The victims are still owed about £600 million. The ruling does not determine ownership, and what Chinese law allows has not yet been tested in court. Each victim must prove ownership of the coins, because creditor status alone is insufficient. Most of the coins' value could remain with UK authorities if victims qualify only as creditors.
