Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said on Monday that the US central bank should move relatively quickly to restrictive monetary policy to control inflation. Hammack said inflation pressures have become more broad-based and are influencing firms' price-setting plans. Hammack said a restrictive stance is appropriate to ensure a timely return to 2% inflation. Hammack said smaller, quicker adjustments are generally preferable when feasible to waiting and risking a larger correction. Investors expect the Fed to keep its policy rate between 3.75% and 4.00% at the October 27-28 meeting. Hammack also backed explaining policymakers' likely responses to economic data, while Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh has opposed firm commitments to future policy decisions.
