AI may pose a blockchain security threat long before it breaks cryptography.

Avalanche founder Emin Gün Sirer recently argued that AI could identify software flaws in systems like the XRP Ledger before it is capable of breaking modern cryptography, making this a risk that deserves far more attention.

According to reports, his warning focused on the possibility that attackers could use AI to discover and exploit system-level bugs in blockchain code, third-party libraries, and wallets — potentially leading to massive losses. At the same time, he did not point to any specific unpatched vulnerability in the XRP Ledger or demonstrate an active attack.

The discussion has gained more attention following the XRP Ledger’s September 25 emergency software update, which brought renewed scrutiny to the platform’s security fixes.

Key takeaway:

The future of blockchain security may depend not only on strong cryptography, but also on secure codebases, reliable dependencies, and resilient wallet infrastructure.
