Zcash already has one ETF conversion in progress. Here's what a second filer competing for the same product means for the asset.

🚀 On October 6, a new filing landed with the SEC: the Winklevoss Zcash ETF, a Form S-1 prospectus for an exchange-traded product designed to hold ZEC and trade on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The sponsor is Winklevoss Asset Services, the same family name behind crypto exchange Gemini.

This isn't the first Zcash ETF filing, and that's exactly what makes it interesting.

🏁 There's already a competitor in this race.

Grayscale filed its own Form S-3 to convert its existing Zcash Trust into a spot ETF, aiming to list under the ticker ZCSH on NYSE Arca, with Coinbase Custody holding the underlying tokens. That filing has already gone through at least five amendments. So, the Winklevoss filing doesn't create the Zcash ETF category, it enters a race that was already underway, with two different sponsors now pursuing two separate products on two different exchanges (Nasdaq versus NYSE Arca).

🤝 The Winklevoss filing comes with a detail the Grayscale one doesn't have: a built-in ecosystem partnership.

The prospectus names Cypherpunk Technologies as the Trust's official "Zcash Ecosystem Partner," a company that will assist with coin holder polling and voting, provide guidance on protocol and technical developments, and offer other advisory services related to Zcash. That's a structural difference worth noting, this product is being built with direct input from a firm embedded in Zcash's own ecosystem, not just a passive custody arrangement.

💰 And Cypherpunk isn't a neutral party here, it's a major Zcash holder in its own right.

Cypherpunk Technologies, backed by Winklevoss Capital, has been aggressively accumulating ZEC. It bought $28 million worth in one purchase, then added another $18 million shortly after, bringing its total holdings to around $150 million, roughly 1.7% of Zcash's entire circulating supply. Separately, a company called Leap Therapeutics used a $50 million investment from Winklevoss Capital specifically to acquire ZEC as part of a corporate treasury strategy, and its stock reportedly surged 300% around that news. The Winklevoss family's involvement in Zcash runs well beyond this single ETF filing.

🗣️ The public commentary from the Winklevoss twins has been pointed, too.

Tyler Winklevoss made a widely shared comparison on X: there are more millionaires in the world (roughly 60 million) than there are whole units of Zcash, since ZEC's supply is capped at 21 million. Cameron Winklevoss tied the asset directly to the AI narrative, posting "If you are bullish on AI, then you are bullish on Zcash." These aren't neutral observations; they're coming from people whose own companies hold substantial ZEC positions and are now also sponsoring an ETF built around it.

🧠 Why does having two competing ETF filers matter for Zcash specifically?

Competition between serious, well-capitalized sponsors tends to accelerate the whole approval and listing process, each filer has an incentive to move quickly rather than let a rival launch first. It can also mean more total marketing, more total assets eventually flowing in, and more institutional infrastructure built around the asset than a single filer would create alone. The flip side is worth naming too: both sponsors here have existing financial stakes in ZEC performing well, Grayscale through its trust, the Winklevoss ecosystem through Cypherpunk and Leap Therapeutics. Their public advocacy isn't disinterested commentary.

✅ What this means for you

If you hold ZEC, this is a genuine escalation of the institutional story we covered in our earlier Zcash piece, not just one ETF attempt but now a competitive race between two credible filers. Competition here is generally a bullish structural signal, though it doesn't guarantee either product gets approved on any particular timeline.

If you're on the sidelines, pay attention to whose capital is actually behind the enthusiasm. When the people publicly championing an asset also run companies that have bought tens of millions of dollars of it, that's useful context for weighing their public statements, not a reason to dismiss them outright, but not neutral analysis either.

If you're tracking the broader privacy coin ETF category, this is a useful case study in how fast institutional infrastructure can build once one filer breaks the ice. Grayscale's filing opened the door; the Winklevoss filing is already walking through it with its own ecosystem partnership structure.

🟢 What would confirm this race benefits Zcash broadly
Both ETF filings progress through SEC review without major delays, the competition brings more total institutional capital and attention to ZEC than a single product would have, and the ecosystem partnership structure proves to be a meaningful addition rather than just a marketing detail.

🔴 What would complicate this story
One or both filings face extended SEC delays or rejection, the heavy Winklevoss-affiliated ZEC holdings raise questions about concentration risk or conflicts of interest once the product is live, or enthusiasm from invested parties turns out to have overstated the case once the ETFs are actually trading.

👀 Three things to watch

1️⃣ SEC review timelines
Does the Winklevoss filing move through the approval process at a similar pace to Grayscale's, or does one get approved well ahead of the other?

2️⃣ Cypherpunk's continued ZEC accumulation
Does the Winklevoss-backed ecosystem partner keep adding to its roughly 1.7% supply stake, and does that concentration become a talking point once the ETF is live?

3️⃣ How the two products differentiate once live
Does the ecosystem-partnership structure in the Winklevoss product translate into real investor benefits, or does it end up functioning similarly to Grayscale's more conventional custody-based approach?

💡 The key takeaway

Zcash now has two serious, well-capitalized ETF filers competing for the same institutional moment, not just one. That's a genuine escalation of the story, backed by real filings, real ecosystem partnerships, and real existing ZEC holdings from the people involved.

The real question is whether this competition builds durable institutional infrastructure around Zcash, or whether it's advocacy from parties who already a significant financial stake in the outcome has, dressed up as neutral market analysis.

That is the part worth watching.
