Robinhood is pushing deeper into active trading with two major announcements: perpetual futures for eligible US customers and 24/7 weekend trading for select US stocks and ETFs, unveiled at the firm's HOOD Summit in Houston on September 29.
Crypto Perps Come to the US
In the coming months, eligible US users will be able to take long or short positions on assets including $BTC, $ETH, $SOL, XRP, $DOGE, $ADA, $LINK, or HYPE, with no expiration dates. Robinhood will offer up to 10x leverage on $BTC and $ETH perpetuals, and 3x leverage on other contracts.
The perps offering will be supported by Bitstamp and will charge 0.01% per trade through the end of the year. Traders will be able to place stop-loss and take-profit orders, monitor liquidation prices in real time, and receive alerts when positions are at risk. CEO Vlad Tenev called it "America's first true perps," with profit and loss settled every 15 minutes.
Perps have become one of crypto's dominant trading products because they let traders take leveraged long or short positions without the expiration dates of conventional futures, though they have historically been associated with offshore exchanges, with regulatory constraints limiting their availability to US retail traders. Bitstamp by Robinhood had already launched crypto perpetual futures for eligible EU traders earlier this year, providing a regulated environment to trade on crypto asset price movements without requiring ownership of the underlying assets.
Weekend Stock Trading, Pending Regulatory Sign-Off
Robinhood now plans to offer weekend trading for equities, allowing customers to trade a selected list of stocks and ETFs over the weekend, extending the currently available trading hours of Sunday at 8pm ET through Friday at 8pm. The capability will be made possible by routing orders to a trading venue operated by Bruce Markets.
Weekend trading will start with a curated list of stocks and ETFs across all account types, powered by Bruce ATS, an institutional-grade alternative trading system that offers strong liquidity, resiliency, and execution quality. Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq have filed to expand their trading hours, while Robinhood launched its 24 Hour Market in 2023, a service that still stops on weekends. Robinhood now plans to fill that gap by offering a selection of stocks and ETFs on Saturdays and Sundays through Bruce ATS.
Robinhood says off-hours trading already accounts for 25% of total volume on busy weekdays. The weekend trading expansion remains subject to regulatory approval.
