Tether Freezes $550M Iran-Linked $USDT
Tether froze almost $550 million in Iran-linked USDT as U.S. sanctions grew.
- The April freezing exceeded $344 million in two addresses flagged by OFAC as belonging to Iran’s Central Bank, IRGC-Qods Force, and Hezbollah.
- The July freezing reached $130 million in four other TRON wallets.
The company bases its freezing of accounts on OFAC SDN list and credible law enforcement information.
Tether claims that it works with more than 340 organizations in 67 nations to support more than 2,900 investigations and froze $4.9 billion worth of assets.
Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, says that blockchains provide better visibility than cash, and the company coordinates freezing of funds with the help of U.S. and international agencies.
