Kenya’s economic growth is closely connected to investment, financial markets, energy and industrial development. The economy grew by 4.6% in 2025, showing continued expansion despite challenges such as high living costs, unemployment, and global economic uncertainty. To achieve sustainable growth, Kenya needs to strengthen productive sectors, attract investment, and create more employment opportunities.
The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) plays an important role in this process by providing a platform where companies can raise capital and investors can participate in business ownership. A strong NSE can encourage savings and investment, support business expansion and provide companies with funds for new projects. Growth in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, banking, energy and infrastructure can therefore create opportunities for companies listed on the NSE and contribute to wider economic development.
Oil refining and energy security are also important to Kenya’s economic future. Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited (KPRL) stopped refining operations in 2013 and has since mainly served as an oil-storage facility. Renewed investment in refining could reduce Kenya’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products and support industries that rely on affordable and reliable energy. A proposed large-scale refinery project in Lamu has been discussed as a potential major investment, although issues such as financing, crude-oil supply, infrastructure and environmental considerations remain important.
The relationship between the economy, NSE and refinery investment is significant. A major energy project can stimulate construction, engineering, transport, logistics, banking, insurance and manufacturing. These activities can create employment, increase business revenues and generate tax income. Companies that benefit from increased economic activity can also attract investment through the NSE, creating a cycle in which investment supports infrastructure, infrastructure supports businesses, and successful businesses contribute to economic growth.
However, major projects should be carefully planned to ensure that they provide sustainable economic and social benefits. Kenya needs appropriate financing, transparency, environmental protection, skilled employment and efficient infrastructure. Ultimately, the combination of economic growth, a strong capital market and reliable energy infrastructure can help Kenya increase industrial production, attract investment, create jobs and strengthen its position as an economic hub in Eas$t Africa.#EFTs $
