Market Breakdown: Regulatory Shocks, Broken Correlations & FOMC Volatility
I’ve been digging through the on-chain data and macro charts over the past few hours, and honestly, the market is no longer following its usual playbook.
The biggest catalyst right now is the failure of the CLARITY Act.
The Senate cloture vote failed 49-50, with ethics provisions still unresolved.
That immediately hit regulation-sensitive assets.
XRP dropped around 10% to $1.30.
Coinbase and Circle also fell roughly 9%.
At the same time, US Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded around $450M in net outflows.
That was their heaviest single-day outflow since late June.
Then we saw another major flush in derivatives.
Around $570M in leveraged futures were wiped out.
But here’s the part I’m watching more closely.
Bitcoin’s price was falling, yet Open Interest actually increased.
OI moved from around 676,000 BTC to 688,000 BTC.
When price falls while OI rises, it suggests that fresh bearish positioning is entering the market rather than the move being driven only by long liquidations.
The macro picture is also behaving very differently.
Bitcoin’s correlation with the Dollar shifted sharply from -0.54 to +0.08.
Its correlation with the S&P 500 also dropped from 0.86 to 0.43.
That tells me the usual macro relationships are losing influence while asset-specific regulatory news takes over.
Now the focus is moving toward the FOMC decision.
CME FedWatch is pricing in a 92.7% probability of a 25bps rate hike.
Historically, after five of the last seven initial rate hikes, the S&P 500 declined over the following six weeks, with an average decline of 2.83%.
But there’s an interesting setup here.
Prediction markets are pricing differently from the rates market.
So if we get a dovish pause or a softer-than-expected message, the market could see a sharp short squeeze.
Over in South Korea, the Kospi’s average daily turnover has fallen to a 2026 low of 20.6T won, around $15B.
Retail AI fatigue also appears to be reducing one of the important liquidity drivers across equities and crypto.
My takeaway is simple.
Derivatives selling is still aggressive, with negative CVDs across the major assets.
The 10-Year yield is also holding near multi-decade highs around 5.04%.
For me, this is not the environment to chase moves blindly.
I’d rather keep risk controls tight and hedge spot exposure ahead of the FOMC press conference.
