Trump DOJ charged 12 immigrants from Somalia, Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, and Iraq for allegedly running fake daycare fraud schemes in California totaling over $10 million. 9 entered as asylum seekers or under TPS.
According to AAG McDonald, the defendants operated "ghost daycares" that billed taxpayers while providing no actual services. One defendant, Mohamad Alawad, allegedly received over $1.2 million for home daycare services during a period when he wasn't even in the U.S. for 120 days.
Charges include wire fraud and money laundering, each carrying up to 20 years in prison and $500,000 fines. Defendants will also face restitution orders.
