His argument?
As competition catches up, frontier AI companies have an incentive to make their technology sound so powerful and dangerous that regulators may slow down the entire industry.
Burry believes calls to pause or restrict frontier AI could ultimately protect today’s biggest players from new competitors.
And he’s taking an even bigger shot:
“LLMs are not AI and won’t be AGI.”
That distinction matters.
If large language models aren’t the path to AGI, then the enormous valuations being built around the assumption of near-term AGI could face a serious reality check.
But if the leading AI labs are right about the risks, Burry’s thesis could look dangerously wrong.
Either way, the AI debate just became much more than a technology argument.
It’s now about competition, regulation, valuations and who controls the next trillion-dollar industry.
