We've already reached the point where AI can search for a flight, compare prices, find a product, research something for us, and even handle increasingly complex tasks.

But there has always been a final wall.

The AI couldn't actually pay.

That's what makes MoonPay's PayBox interesting.

PayBox is a non-custodial payment vault that connects directly with ChatGPT and Claude. Instead of leaving the conversation, opening another website, filling out payment details, and completing the transaction yourself, you can give the agent a task in plain language.

For example:

"Buy $100 of $USDC."

Or:

"Book the 9am flight."

The AI can prepare the transaction, while PayBox provides the permission and payment layer underneath it. Users can approve transactions with a passkey, or configure rules that allow certain transactions to happen automatically within defined limits.

And that's where this gets more interesting than simply adding a payment button to an AI chatbot.

The permission layer matters

Giving an AI access to money sounds terrifying if the model simply receives unrestricted access to your wallet or card.

PayBox is designed around the opposite idea.

Credentials and payment methods operate under user-defined permissions. The system can enforce spending limits and other controls, while users retain control over what the agent is allowed to do. MoonPay also describes PayBox as non-custodial, meaning MoonPay isn't simply taking custody of your funds and handing them to an AI.

That creates an important distinction:

You're not giving an AI your bank account.

You're giving an agent a controlled capability to transact.

And that distinction is going to matter a lot as agents become more autonomous.

Then there's x402

PayBox is only one piece of the larger shift MoonPay is working on.

MoonPay's agent stack supports x402, a payment protocol designed for machine-to-machine payments over HTTP. An AI agent can encounter a paid API, make the required payment, and continue with the request without a traditional checkout flow.

MoonPay's implementation currently supports paying x402 API fees in $USDC on Solana($SOL ) or Base.

This creates a very different model for how software can interact:

AI discovers a service → AI decides it needs the service → AI pays → AI continues the task.

The human doesn't necessarily need to manually approve every tiny API payment.

That's where the idea of agentic commerce starts becoming much more interesting.

From assistants to economic agents

MoonPay's broader MoonAgents stack goes beyond payments. Its tools can give AI agents access to things such as wallets, swaps, transfers, trading, market research, DCA and other crypto operations. MoonPay says its agent layer currently provides dozens of crypto-specific tools through its agent ecosystem.

So the progression starts to look something like this:

AI that answers questions

AI that performs tasks

AI that can access tools

AI that can transact

And that last step changes the equation.

Money becomes another tool an AI agent can use.

An agent could theoretically pay for an API, purchase a service, swap an asset, move funds, or complete a purchase as part of a larger task.

The interesting question is no longer just:

"What can AI do?"

It's:

"What are we comfortable allowing AI to do with our money?"

That's the part I'm watching.

Because once AI can both think and transact, we're not just talking about another chatbot feature.

We're starting to build software that can participate in the economy on our behalf.

And that could be a much bigger shift than AI simply getting better at answering questions.
