ANTHROPIC SAYS NO BAN ON OPEN-WEIGHT MODELS 🚨👀🤖

Anthropic published a full position note from its CEO.

Open-weight models (AI systems where anyone can download the full model files and run them without a closed lab subscription) are the main fight this week. 📂

Anthropic says three clear things:
✅ It has never asked for a ban on open-weight models as a whole class
✅ Models without "dangerous capabilities" are a public good (useful and free to run once someone pays for the computers)
⚠️ It still wants three hard rules: keep powerful chips out of China, crack down on industrial-scale distillation (copying a closed model by heavy training on its outputs), and force mandatory safety tests on all strong models, open and closed

So the public line is "no ban."
The real fight is who defines "dangerous" and "strong enough to need a test." 🧠⚖️

This lands in the same week Washington is debating limits on Chinese open models, after Kimi-class releases shook closed US labs on price and coding work.

A big industry letter (Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft, Hugging Face, Mistral and others) asked for no broad open-weight clampdown. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google were not on that list. 📊
