According to Blockworks, Bitcoin mining company Riot Platforms has purchased 31,500 additional miners from MicroBT for $97.4 million, aiming to increase its self-mining hash rate capacity at its Rockdale, TX facility from 12.4 exahashes per second (EH/s) to 15.1 EH/s by the end of July. The acquisition of M60S air-coolers machines is part of Riot's plan to replace 17,000 under-performing miners and add 14,500 more. The company's hash rate target for the end of 2024 is 31 EH/s as it continues to expand its Corsicana, TX facility.
Meanwhile, CleanSpark, a Las Vegas-based competitor, has completed its acquisition of three data centers in Mississippi as part of a $19.8 million cash deal. The acquisition is expected to increase CleanSpark's operating hash rate by approximately 2.4 EH/s. Both Riot Platforms and CleanSpark are making these moves to boost hash rate and optimize efficiency in preparation for the upcoming bitcoin halving in April, when per-block rewards will drop from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC.
