Vitalik Buterin sells $1.6 million worth of memecoins!

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin drew attention with his $1.6 million memecoin sale.

Vitalik Buterin converted $1.6 million worth of memecoins sent to him into Ether. The Ethereum co-founder had previously promised that the money from the sale of memecoins would be donated to charity. Blockchain analytics firm Spot On Chain stated in an X post dated October 13 that the sale included $982,800 worth of Moo Deng (MOODENG), $231,000 worth of Monsterra (MSTR), and $183,000 worth of ETHEREUM IS GOOD (EBULL).

Buterin also sold shares in Popcat (POPCAT), Fwog (FWOG), and vitalek buteren (VITALIK). According to Spot On Chain’s announcement on Oct. 13, he has converted $2.78 million worth of memecoins into Ether in the past nine days and donated $884,000 to charity.

Buterin praised memecoin issuers who sent him coins to donate, but suggested that issuers consider donating directly instead of sending memecoins. Buterin announced in an X post on Oct. 7 that he was donating all 10 billion memecoins he received to an organization working on technologies that combat respiratory diseases.

On Aug. 15, Buterin donated all of the animal-themed memecoins he collected in the past 12 months to Effective Altruism Funds’ Animal Welfare Fund. According to Spot On Chain, the $700 million crypto portfolio consists of $2.4 million in MOODENG tokens, $144,000 in Neiro (NEIRO), $117,000 in MSTR, and $80,000 in Degen (DEGEN).

Buterin has long argued that memecoins can contribute to society by funding important public projects or allowing people in low-income countries to earn a living.
