The group behind the world's largest crypto heist—TraderTraitor—is a state-sponsored collective groomed from childhood to hunt "big game." Now, artificial intelligence is helping them swell Kim Jong Un's coffers and fund military expansion .
The numbers are staggering:
• FBI blames TraderTraitor for the $6.3 billion Binance hack
• The unit may have only a dozen or so members
• AI has lowered the skill barrier and dramatically accelerated operations
• Their revenues could be funding nearly half of North Korea's banned weapons programs
The strategy is called "Big Game Hunting"—targeting high-value crypto businesses, mapping their infrastructure, then tampering with systems or transfer processes to execute massive thefts .
With new AI tools, "the barriers to such skills have dropped significantly, while the speed at which these operations can be carried out has increased tremendously," said Park Seong-su of Zscaler .
Chainalysis estimates this hacker army is responsible for 89% of reported crypto hack losses this year .
For Kim's regime, crypto hacking has evolved beyond a criminal stopgap. It's now a primary revenue stream—one that every successful heist makes harder to stop.
