Standard Chartered has launched a regulated cryptocurrency trading service for eligible affluent clients in the United Arab Emirates.
The new service allows qualified investors to buy and sell Bitcoin and Ethereum directly through their existing Standard Chartered bank accounts without opening an account on a separate crypto exchange or managing an external wallet.
How the Service Works
The platform combines trading, custody and settlement within Standard Chartered’s own ecosystem.
The service was developed with Zodia Markets, a digital asset company backed by SC Ventures. It operates under approval from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA).
For now, the offering supports only:
Access is initially limited to eligible Professional Investor clients in the UAE, meaning it is not yet available to ordinary retail customers.
Why This Matters
This launch represents the first time Standard Chartered has offered direct crypto trading to its wealth clients anywhere in the world.
It also shows how digital assets are becoming part of traditional private banking. Instead of sending money to an external exchange, qualified investors can now access crypto through a regulated institution they already trust.
Standard Chartered will manage custody and settlement through a closed-loop system designed to reduce exposure to third-party wallet risks.
UAE Strengthens Its Crypto Position
The bank selected the UAE because of its clear regulatory environment and growing role as a global digital asset hub.
Standard Chartered plans to expand the service into other markets, although no specific timeline has been announced.
The bigger message is clear: Bitcoin and Ethereum are moving deeper into mainstream wealth management and major banks are preparing for that shift.
