The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has approved a Cboe BZX rule change allowing six new futures-based ETPs targeting three times the daily performance of Bitcoin, Ether, and four commodities.

While the SEC has approved the crypto products, investors will still have to wait for a final registration before trading can begin.

SEC Approves 3x Bitcoin and Ether ETPs

On 2nd October 2026, the SEC approved products from Volatility Shares’ VS Trust for listing and trading, placing crypto and traditional commodities in the same product lineup.

The group includes

  • The Crypto Pair: The 3x Bitcoin ETF and 3x Ether ETF.

  • The Hard Asset Lineup: 3x Gold and 3x Silver ETPs.

  • The Energy Components: 3x Crude Oil and 3x Natural Gas ETPs

These funds aim to deliver 3x the asset’s daily price move. So, if the asset rises 1%, the fund could rise about 3%. If it falls 1%, the fund could also fall about 3%.

SEC *approves* listing & trading of first 3x leveraged bitcoin & ether ETFs…

Also, none of the six approved funds will physically hold Bitcoin, Ether, precious metal bars, or barrels of oil. Instead, the products will use regulated futures contracts, with the Bitcoin and Ether ETPs tracking CME Group futures prices.

“Big Win for Volatility Shares”

Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas called the SEC approval a “big win” for Volatility Shares.

Volatility Shares already made a name for itself by launching the first 2x Bitcoin ETF (BITX) and 2x Ether ETF (ETHU). The new approval now gives the firm a path to offer 3x leveraged crypto products.

The SEC approved six triple-leveraged ETPs under Volatility Shares’ VS Trust, covering Bitcoin, Ether, gold, silver, crude oil and natural gas.

Looks like SEC just approved a 3x Bitcoin ETP as well as 3x Ether, Gold, Silver, Oil, Nat Gas under 33 Act. Wow. Big win for VolatilityShares. pic.twitter.com/MpZuVafHF7

Balchunas also pointed out how much the crypto ETF market has changed. Less than three years ago, the SEC was still fighting over Grayscale’s spot Bitcoin ETF.

Products Still Await S-1 Registration

However, the products still need a separate Form S-1 registration statement to become effective before trading can begin. SEC staff must declare the registration effective before the public tickers can start trading on brokerages.

The current filings do not provide a specific date for when the S-1 registration will become effective.
