Your seed phrase isn't a password. It's the wallet.
When you create a self-custody wallet, it gives you 12 or 24 words. Those words can regenerate every account and every key in that wallet, on any device, forever. Whoever has them doesn't need your phone, your PIN, or your permission. They just restore the wallet and move the funds.
That's why there's no "forgot seed phrase" button. No support desk holds a copy, because the whole point of self-custody is that nobody else does. Lose the words and lose the phone, and the funds are gone. Share the words, and the funds are gone too.
Some habits that follow from this:
• Write it on paper (or metal), not in a screenshot, notes app, or cloud folder
• Never type it into a website, a "wallet validator," or a support chat
• Anyone who asks for it is running a scam, whatever logo they use
• Store it somewhere you could find in five years, away from your devices
One distinction beginners often miss: a Binance exchange account doesn't give you a seed phrase, because Binance holds the keys for you. A seed phrase comes with self-custody wallets, which is a different trade-off, not a better or worse one.
If your wallet vanished tomorrow, could you restore it today? Or is the phrase still sitting in your photos?
