The European Central Bank is inviting fintechs, payment providers and other companies to explore new digital-euro ideas through its innovation activities.
The areas being explored include:
🤖 AI-enabled payments
🧠 AI agents interacting with each other
⚙️ Machine-to-machine payments
💶 Micropayments and new payment experiences
The exploration workstream is scheduled to run through workshops in Q1 and Q2 of 2027.
Meanwhile, the digital euro pilot is planned for the second half of 2027, with 36 payment service providers already selected to participate.
This doesn’t mean the digital euro is launching tomorrow.
But the direction is becoming clearer:
AI + digital money + automated payments.
