Cryptocurrency has moved beyond being merely a digital investment. Over the past few years, some countries have experimented with using Bitcoin or other crypto assets within their national monetary and payment systems.
The most notable examples are El Salvador and the Central African Republic (CAR).
🇸🇻 El Salvador — The First Major Bitcoin Experiment
In September 2021, El Salvador became the first country to officially adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, alongside the US dollar. The government introduced the Bitcoin Law and promoted Bitcoin for payments, financial inclusion and digital innovation.
However, the country's Bitcoin policy changed significantly in 2025. Following reforms associated with an IMF-supported program, the government removed the mandatory acceptance of Bitcoin by businesses and made private-sector acceptance voluntary. The obligation to pay taxes in Bitcoin was also removed.
Therefore, El Salvador remains historically important as the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, but it is no longer accurate to describe Bitcoin there as a compulsory everyday currency.
🇨🇫 Central African Republic — A Short-Lived Experiment
The Central African Republic adopted legislation in April 2022 that introduced Bitcoin/crypto assets as legal tender alongside the CFA franc.
The objective included promoting investment, financial inclusion and a blockchain-based economy. However, the policy faced legal and monetary challenges because the country is part of the Central African monetary union.
According to the IMF, the Central African Republic subsequently amended its legislation and abandoned the legal-tender status of crypto assets in order to harmonize its rules with the regional monetary framework.
🌐 What About Other Countries?
Many countries—including the United States, Switzerland, the UAE and several others—allow different forms of cryptocurrency activity, such as trading, investment, payments or blockchain businesses.
But legal cryptocurrency activity is not the same thing as making Bitcoin a national legal tender.
This distinction is very important:
Crypto-friendly country ≠ country where cryptocurrency is national currency.
💡 What Can We Learn?
The experiences of El Salvador and the Central African Republic demonstrate that adopting cryptocurrency at the national level is a major economic and monetary experiment.
Cryptocurrencies can offer advantages such as:
• Fast digital transactions
• Financial access for people without traditional bank accounts
• Cross-border payment possibilities
• Blockchain-based financial innovation
At the same time, governments have to consider:
• High price volatility
• Consumer protection
• Monetary-policy implications
• Financial stability
• Regulation and taxation
🔎 Final Thought
Bitcoin's journey from a decentralized digital asset to an experiment in national monetary policy is one of the most important developments in modern financial history.
El Salvador remains the most prominent example of national Bitcoin adoption, while the Central African Republic represents an example of a country that later reversed its legal-tender experiment.
The future may bring further experiments with Bitcoin, stablecoins and central-bank digital currencies—but each model has different economic and regulatory implications.
