Pi Network (@PiCoreTeam) has moved its Testnet to Protocol 28, following the successful completion of the Protocol 27 Mainnet upgrade. The upgrade continues a steady sequence of mandatory protocol changes the project has carried out through 2026.

What Protocol 28 Changes

The new protocol targets several improvements to how the network and its applications function. One change addresses delays involving transaction data, while another allows developers to upgrade groups of smart contracts simultaneously rather than handling each contract individually. The protocol also introduces a safer method for modifying stored data as applications evolve.

The changes are being tested on Testnet first, giving the network and its developer community an environment to validate the new protocol before it reaches the live network.

For context, Pi Network has run a series of mandatory infrastructure upgrades this year, covering smart contract support, cryptographic tooling, contract security, and transaction authentication. Protocol 27, which reached Mainnet in late September, brought more flexible transaction authentication and laid groundwork for decentralized exchange activity.

Key Dates for Node Operators

All node operators are required to upgrade to Protocol 28 by October 13, 2026. That deadline falls three days before the planned Mainnet activation, currently scheduled for October 16, 2026. Operators who do not upgrade by the deadline risk losing connectivity to the network.

The Testnet deployment follows the same pattern used in prior upgrades, where a Testnet rollout precedes the Mainnet switch by several weeks. General $PI holders are not required to take any action during this period.
