Biotech is starting soft again.

U.S. biotechnology stocks are mostly lower in pre-market on Thursday, with the sector tracking a broader risk-off open. The two sector benchmarks — *SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI)* and *iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB)* — are both indicated down ∼0.6% to 1% ahead of the bell, underperforming the S&P 500 futures.

It's not a crash, just a fade. After a strong run last week on obesity and gene-editing headlines, traders are locking in gains.

*Early movers:*

- *Large caps under light pressure:* Amgen (AMGN), Gilead (GILD), Vertex (VRTX), and Regeneron (REGN) are all down 0.3% - 0.8% in pre-market, dragging IBB.

- *MRNA / vaccines mixed:* Moderna (MRNA) and BioNTech (BNTX) are slightly red as traders await CDC updates and EU procurement headlines.

- *Small/mid-cap biotech weaker:* Names with upcoming catalysts like Sarepta (SRPT), CRISPR Therapeutics (CRSP), and Intellia (NTLA) are seeing sharper pre-market dips of 1-2% on thin volume. That's typical for XBI — when risk appetite drops, the high-beta names go first.

- *One bright spot:* A couple of commercial-stage names with PDUFA dates next week are flat to green, showing stock pickers are still active.

*Why the pullback?*

1. *Yields up, risk down.* 10-year Treasury back above 4.3% overnight after hawkish Fed speak. Biotech lives and dies on future cash flows, so it feels rate moves more than most.

2. *No new catalysts today.* FDA calendar is empty this morning. No major data readouts or M&A rumors to offset.

3. *Profit-taking after a hot stretch.* XBI rallied 6% in the last 5 sessions. When Nasdaq futures stall, biotech traders are first to hit sell.

It's still early — pre-market volume is light and a single FDA headline can flip the tape by 9:30am. But as of now, the setup is defensive.

Traders are watching 10:00am consumer confidence and any headlines out of the BIO conference for a spark. Until then, expect biotech to remain the high-beta drag.
