US Treasury cuts off crypto exchange MEXC đșđž
The US Treasury's FinCEN has ordered American banks to stop processing money transfers with crypto exchange MEXC Global.
Treasury says MEXC facilitated at least $16 billion in transactions linked to sanctions evasion, cybercrime and sanctioned groups in Iran, Russia and North Korea between May 2021 and May 2026. The ban takes effect 30 days after it is published in the Federal Register.
Why does this matter?
MEXC is one of the world's largest crypto exchanges, handling over $1 billion a day. A US banking cutoff is a serious blow for any exchange, and traders on MEXC may rush to move their funds, which can add short-term volatility.
Long term, this is another sign that US regulators are getting tougher with offshore exchanges. Big exchanges with clean compliance look stronger, while risky platforms face real pressure. This is not a ban on Bitcoin or crypto itself, and MEXC can still operate outside the US system for now.
Stay careful with your funds on smaller exchanges, and keep your main holdings somewhere you trust.
