Bitcoin is drifting near $80.7K. Meanwhile, banks just shipped more on-chain money in one week than in most of the past year. That gap is the story.

While traders watched $BTC slip under $81,000, five separate moves landed between Oct 19 and Oct 23. Each one, alone, is a headline. Together they show where regulated digital money is heading, and what it could mean for crypto liquidity.

WHAT HAPPENED

1. HSBC RedCoin went live (Oct 23). HSBC launched RCHKD, a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin licensed by the HKMA, inside PayMe. Over 3.3 million users can activate a wallet for P2P transfers and payments at 100,000+ merchants. HSBC's reserve page showed about HKD 80.7M in circulation as of Oct 24, almost all of it added in the past 7 days.

2. SoFi launched SOFIE (Oct 22). A national bank-issued tokenized deposit for consumers: each token is $1 on deposit at SoFi Bank, earning a variable 4.40% APY (rate as of Oct 20) with FDIC coverage up to limits. It converts 1:1 into SoFiUSD, a payment stablecoin, to buy crypto or move funds on-chain 24/7. Once converted, FDIC coverage and interest stop.

3. JPM Coin (JPMD) went live on Ethereum (Oct 19). But Sentora's review on Oct 23 found zero JPMD supply and zero transfers on Ethereum so far. Live is not the same as used.

4. The OCC finalized its GENIUS Act rule (published Oct 23, effective Jan 18, 2027). The ban on issuers paying yield to holders stays. But the OCC dropped the proposed "rebuttable presumption" against affiliate and third-party reward deals and will judge them case by case. Redemptions still due within two business days; $5M minimum capital floor.

5. Malaysia and Thailand joined Singapore's BLOOM (Oct 23). Bank Negara Malaysia and the Bank of Thailand joined MAS as policymaker members of a cross-border digital money initiative covering tokenized deposits and regulated stablecoins. New participants include Visa, Mastercard, Ripple, Maybank and the World Bank Group, alongside Circle, Coinbase and J.P. Morgan.

WHY IT MATTERS

Two models are forming side by side. Stablecoins (RCHKD, SoFiUSD) are bearer-style tokens built to move. Tokenized deposits (SOFIE, JPMD) keep money on a bank balance sheet, with interest and deposit insurance, but less freedom. SoFi is the first to bolt both together: earn in the deposit, convert to the stablecoin when you want to act on-chain.

The OCC's yield decision is the hinge. Issuers still cannot pay yield directly, but rewards through partners aren't presumed illegal. That keeps the "stablecoin rewards" business alive in the US, and keeps pressure on banks to offer yield-bearing alternatives like SOFIE.

BLOOM tackles the next problem: if every bank issues its own token, they need common rules to settle across borders. Without that, digital money just recreates today's fragmented system on new rails.

THE MARKET DATA

Binance spot at 20:02 KST, Oct 24:

- $BTC: $80,678 (-1.14% 24h), 24h range $80,451-$82,061

- $ETH: $2,370.98 (-0.93% 24h), 24h range $2,351.55-$2,417.77

- BTC 14-day daily range: $79,800-$84,898

Flows are weak. US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $635.6M net outflows on Oct 22, reversing the prior day's $528.4M inflow (The Block): https://www.theblock.co/news/markets/2026-10-23-bitcoin-etfs-swing-back-to-net-outflows-erase-previous-day-inflows-426483

So the infrastructure is improving while price is not. Those two timelines rarely match.

BULL SCENARIO

Regulated on-ramps lower friction. A SoFi user converting idle deposits into SoFiUSD and then into crypto is a direct pipe from bank savings to the market. If RCHKD and SOFIE adoption grows and JPMD actually starts moving on Ethereum, settlement demand for public chains rises. For BTC, a daily close back above $82,000 would put the 14-day high near $84,900 back in view.

BEAR SCENARIO

Bank tokens may compete with crypto rather than feed it. A 4.40% FDIC-insured token is an easy place to park cash and never leave. JPMD's zero on-chain activity shows launches can be mostly announcement. Near term, macro dominates: ETF outflows and rising yields. Losing the $79,800 area would break the two-week range to the downside.

RISKS

- Adoption: RCHKD's ~HKD 80.7M is early-stage; launch-week growth may not last.

- Regulation: the OCC rule takes effect Jan 18, 2027, and AML/sanctions rules are still to come in a separate rulemaking.

- Fragmentation: interoperability is still a work in progress, which is exactly why BLOOM exists.

- Price: none of these launches guarantees flows into BTC or ETH.

THE TAKEAWAY

Price action says "risk-off." Infrastructure says "banks are moving money on-chain, slowly." The real test isn't announcements but usage: circulation figures, transfer counts, and whether bank tokens lead users toward public crypto or keep them inside the bank.

Your view: will bank-issued tokens bring new money into crypto, or keep it parked in the bank?
