The international criminal police organization Interpol says its recent operation across Africa has resulted in 1,462 arrests and the recovery of more than $105 million in illicit funds. Conducted in 21 countries, the crackdown targeted online investment scams, digital blackmail and other cybercrimes that accounted for more than $385 million in losses, affecting nearly 66,000 victims. Key actions included the arrest of 365 foreign nationals in Uganda for fake investment schemes targeting people in Asia, including pensioners; the uncovering of fraud schemes in Nigeria; the shutdown of illegal cryptocurrency mining operations in Angola; fraudulent mobile loan schemes in Tanzania; and a vehicle import scam in Gabon. Participating countries included Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Rwanda, Cameroon and Zimbabwe, as well as the United States. INTERPOL also noted the growing use of artificial intelligence to make scams more sophisticated, with several investigations still ongoing.
