Solana activated the Alpenglow upgrade on Wednesday, moving the network to a new voting system that targets transaction finality in about 150 milliseconds. This is a significant drop from the previous multi-second wait, which was recently measured at 6.6 seconds. Validators now send votes directly to each other to create certificates rather than recording them as on-chain transactions.

While $SOL rose nearly 3% in the day leading up to the launch, the real impact is on the network's utility for retail and exchanges. Faster finality allows shops to confirm stablecoin payments instantly and exchanges to credit deposits without the usual wait. You might see lower transaction totals on dashboards now because validator votes are no longer counted in those figures.

The next major step for the protocol is the Agave 4.5 upgrade.
